SINGAPORE –Students interested in working in the hospitality industry will be able to benefit from the creation of a new certificate jointly developed by one of the most prestigious hotels in the world and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne (EHL) Hospitality Business School – the top university for hospitality education, based on rankings – signed an agreement in June with ITE to develop the creation of a new diploma technical in the hotel and hospitality management.

In announcing the announcement today (March 21), the education minister Chan Chun Sing said: “This technical diploma will offer the opportunity to those who are looking to make a move in the hospitality sector and draws on both the Swiss quality of hospitality education and the unique applied learning method of ITE.

“Graduates of the course will be equipped with skills in supply chain and facilities management, and new in-demand skills such as business analytics and sustainability hospitality practices.”

The professor said these abilities would help students work in various environments in the service and hospitality industries.

There were no further details about when the diploma course will be completed or how many students it would enroll were offered.

The new school is a prime illustration of how EHL plays a significant part in Singapore’s higher education, as stated by Mr. Chan. At the opening ceremony for EHL’s inaugural international campus in Singapore, he spoke.

The renowned hospitality business school is home to more than 4,500 students studying at its three campuses: Lausanne, Passugg, which are both located in Switzerland and Singapore.

Mr. Chan stated that EHL could leverage the relationships local institutions can establish with regional and local companies to develop joint programs and exchange the best practices and teaching techniques, for example, catering to adult students.

This occurs when SkillsFuture Singapore has been encouraging private institutions of higher education to engage more in adult education, He said.

“I am glad to hear that EHL plans to offer online certificates and short courses for adult learners,” He declared.

He also said that they could increase opportunities for upskilling and increase the career possibilities for those already working in the service and hospitality industry and will help them remain current and relevant.

Students attending the EHL Campus (Singapore) receive the same internationally recognized degree of Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality which is also available on the principal Lausanne campus.

The students begin with a preparation year in Lausanne and then three years of studies in Singapore.

The campus also provides:

·         Short courses for executives in areas like the management of luxury brands.

·         Designing concepts for hotels and restaurants.

·         Analytics for people.

It received its first cohort of approximately 170 students of 30 countries in February. That is comprised of 49 Singaporeans.

This new school is situated on Lady Hill Road, near Orchard Road, in the old Kinloss House that was once a boarding school used by the youngsters who were the children of British soldiers.

The building, which covers 2,400 square meters located upon 1.9ha inland, is home to classrooms, meeting rooms, large multi-purpose halls, and other areas for students.

In a keynote address at Monday’s event in the morning, Ms. Michel Rochat, EHL Group’s chief executive officer, stated that the future for the hospitality sector would be “exciting,” despite the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 virus.

“Certainly, the pandemic has been tough in many ways. But it also presents an unprecedented opportunity. We are entering a new world. The hospitality industry is learning afresh the all-important question of how to connect with people,” he added.
