Tulio De Oliveira is the head of South Africa’s gene-sequencing institutes. He says scientists have found two new sublines of the omicron coronavirus.
He said that the lineages were named BA.4 & BA.5 via text message and tweets.
Bloomberg reported that de Oliveira stated that the lineages have not caused an increase in infection in South Africa and were found in samples from many countries.
South Africa has administered 34,146 981 vaccine doses, with 5,845 being administered Monday.

This includes the 8,333,395 Johnson & Johnson vaccines as well as 25,813,586 Pfizer vaccinations that have been administered in South Africa to date.
One thousand nine hundred sixty-seven people were fully vaccinated within the last 24 hours. This includes 867 Johnson & Johnson vaccines and 801 Pfizer vaccines.

The NICD reported that 11154 tests had been performed in the past 24 hours. Five hundred fifty-three new cases were also recorded, a 5.0% positive rate.
The Department of Health reported two deaths. One occurred within the last 24-48 hours. It stated that the total number of fatalities is 100,098.
Gauteng Province is home to the majority (50%), followed closely by Western Cape (18%). KwaZulu-Natal was responsible for 17%, Mpumalanga for 5%, and Eastern Cape and Limpopo for 3%.
